Creative Courage for Life

Parents come to Stagecoach for many different reasons. A child may already sing around the house, make up dances or take every opportunity to perform, and the family wants somewhere that enthusiasm can be developed. Another parent may simply be looking for an activity that will help their child meet people, become more comfortable in a group, build confidence or have something enjoyable and worthwhile outside school.

Stagecoach brings those needs together through singing, dancing and acting. Students receive performing arts teaching, but the experience of learning also asks students to communicate, listen, prepare, cooperate and keep working when something takes time to master. These are not separate life-skills lessons added to the class. They are part of learning a scene, remembering choreography, singing with an ensemble and working towards something with other people.

Over time, a weekly class can become an important part of a student’s life. It may be the place where a quieter student begins to feel comfortable contributing, where an enthusiastic performer learns the discipline needed to improve, or where a young person finds friendships built around a shared interest. For another student, Stagecoach may be the first place where a creative interest is taken seriously and given the time, teaching and encouragement needed to develop.

Parents may notice the difference in ways that have little to do with being on stage: a child who is more willing to speak during a school presentation, less discouraged when something goes wrong, better prepared to join an unfamiliar group or more able to listen and contribute when working with other people. These changes are personal, and no two students will experience Stagecoach in exactly the same way, but the opportunity to develop extends well beyond the material being rehearsed in class.
