The Examination and Methods of Assessment


Stagecoach Teacher Training Course (2 Weeks)
To obtain the ADPA qualification, students need to take 2 examinations. The first examination is arranged by Stagecoach and covers Unit One and Two of the course (detailed below). This is taken in the last two days of the 2 week course and takes place at Stagecoach and involves a 15 minute viva voce (discussion) with the examiner. Students must pass the first exam and have taught for 20 hours before they can apply for the 2nd examination - ADPA examination. Stagecoach Fast Track Course (2 Days)
To obtain the ADPA qualification, students need to take 1 examination. Unit Two of the course (detailed below) prepares the student to take the ADPA examination. Fast Track students can apply at any time to arrange their exam by applying direct to performanceartsawards to arrange ADPA examination.*

*Please note there will be an additional examination fee for the ADPA examination.

Unit One: (covered in the two week course)
Lesson Planning and Delivery
Candidates will be assessed on the three main sections of the examination specification:
1.Demonstrate the ability to teach group music theatre lessons
Candidates will deliver one group lesson (in singing, dancing or acting, or any combination of the three) lasting not less than twenty minutes, following their lesson plan

2. Demonstrate skills in group performance
Candidates will take part in a devised piece of musical theatre created from 3 given stimuli (eg. a picture, a poem, a piece of music)

3. Understand how to create lesson plans for a music theatre course
Candidates are required to create a set of ten lesson plans for imagined (or real) lessons, outlining theme and general teaching strategies.

Candidates will submit a portfolio containing a comprehensive feedback sheet, handouts, a theatre review and interesting and relevant cuttings, articles etc.

Please note: on successful completion of Unit One, Stagecoach requires candidates with no teaching experience to undertake 20 hours of teaching before taking the Unit Two Examination


Unit Two: (covered in both courses)
Assessing and Observing Teaching Practice
Candidates will be required to demonstrate the following, as outlined in the examination specification:

1. Demonstrate the ability to observe and critique teaching practice
Candidates will observe a variety of teaching approaches, and be asked, during a Viva Voce (discussion with the examiner) to make balanced judgements on communication, language, engagement, structure, variety, approaches and fluency of lessons observed.

2. Demonstrate and talk about teaching methods within a given teaching scenario
Candidates will be asked to demonstrate an effective approach to a prepared teaching element (eg. What warm-up would you use? How will you deal with a disruptive element in the classroom?)

3. Demonstrate knowledge of other relevant issues connected with the role of teacher
Articulate an awareness of Health and Safety issues, Child Protection issues and issues concerning age-appropriate material. In addition, you will need to have knowledge of two special educational syndromes and how these learners with these might be fully integrated into lessons and rehearsal and performance processes.

Please remember that you will be supported throughout the Stagecoach Teacher Training Course by professional and friendly tutors and that the examination specifications will all be covered by the course
