Amanda - Jayne Manning
Course Attended June 2011
As a performer and a teacher, I wanted to find a course that would enable me to become a better and more creative teacher. I am delighted to say that this course is everything I had hoped for and much more in my own personal development as a performer and a teacher. By going back to basics and looking at all the elements that are required to become an exceptional teacher and facilitator, I was able to experiment with my new strategies and construct very detailed lesson plans during the course. The tutors and guest tutors gave me a new set of tools so I can inspire and engage all my pupils regardless of their age or ability.

I thought that Veronica and Stephanie were very attentive and genuinely work tirelessly to help educate new teachers and give old teachers fresh skills. I love the idea of layering lessons so that there is a clear connection between the warm up, exercises and performance projects therefore reinforcing learning objectives.

By moving around the space and being part of the class myself, the students are more open to creative learning and do not get bored and disengage from me. Also this technique is very beneficial to children who may have communication disorders and not able to concentrate for long periods of time. I found the lectures on "Special Children" and "Child Development" very interesting and am now able to recognise elements in various syndromes that may be the underlying cause for constant disruption or level of learning in future classes. I now have many ideas in how to keep these children engaged for the whole class. I am also aware of 'adults who behave in an 'inappropriate' way around children thanks to a lecture about the 'warning signs' of children who may be at risk from abuse. This was a tough subject to discuss but is one of the upmost importance if we are to protect children from the wrong kind of interest.

The performance project was hard work and I really enjoyed being able to create something personal and original with two other members of the group. I think we achieved a great piece of devised theatre with a strong theme and an interesting journey for all three characters on stage.

The talk from the examiner at the beginning of the course gave us some really valuable advice on how to write our ten week lesson plan and how to construct 20 minute lesson for the exam. I hope that I was able to deliver a good standard of work that showed lots of layering, creative teaching and learning during my examination, as I dedicated a lot of research to developing my teaching skills, the lesson and the materials used during it.

I would highly recommend the Stagecoach/ADPA Teacher Training Course to every teacher who world in the Performance Arts Educational sector no matter what your age or level of experience in teaching. It will revive your inspiration to teach and bring back the satisfaction of giving knowledge to others and changing lives.
